Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
