Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
