Learn to Play Craps – Tricks and Techniques: The History of Craps

Be smart, play smart, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
