Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
