Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
