Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
