Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
