Learn to Play Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
