Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
