Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
