Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
