Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
