Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
