Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
