Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
