Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
