Master Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
