Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
