Be clever, play clever, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
