Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
