Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
