Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
