Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
