Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
