Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
