Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
