Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
