Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
